SUMMARY:Joint event with the TCPA: Sir Frederic J Osborn memorial event 2022: Exploring a sense of place.
DESCRIPTION:Join the Town & Country Planning Association for an evening of poetry\, drinks and discussion for their annual event in memory of Sir Frederic J Osborn. Osborn was an important figure in the TCPA’s history. A passionate campaigner for healthy places and social justice\, Osborn was instrumental in securing the New Towns legislation\, which enabled 32 new towns to be established across the UK as part of creating and rebuilding homes and communities following the Second World War. Alongside his campaigning work – Osborn wrote prolifically including satire and poetry\, and a book of his verses – ‘Can Man Plan?’ – was published in 1959. \nWith performances from poets Zena Edwards and Emily Hasler with Jonathan Glancey\, architectural critic\, writer and Patron of The Betjeman Society\, this event will explore how poetry and the arts can help us understand people and place. The event will touch on some of Osborn’s work and correspondence with Sir John Betjeman\, one the pre-eminent poets of the 20th century who enthused people about the value of Britain’s cities\, landscapes and architecture\, alongside contemporary perspectives on creating a sense of place. This subject complements TCPA’s wider work\, particularly on reuniting art and planning\, and on exploring how the foundations of the Garden City movement can give practical hope to 21st century communities. \nThe TCPA are grateful to the Lady Margaret Paterson Osborn Trust for supporting this event\, which is being held in partnership with The Betjeman Society. \nTickets are free but should be booked online using the link below. \n

SUMMARY:Betjeman & Larkin: a joint event with the Philip Larkin Society in Leicester as part of the Larkin centenary celebrations.
DESCRIPTION:This year is the 100th anniversary of the birth of poet Philip Larkin and the Philip Larkin Society are joining with us to help celebrate the event among many other activities being organised by the Philip Larkin Society. Larkin was a Librarian at the University of Leicester\, before moving to the Brynmor Jones Library at the University of Hull. Larkin’s time at Leicester is marked by his association with Monica Jones\, an English Literature lecturer at the University of Leicester\, and subject of a recent book about the relationship published in 2020. The event\, held in a convenient venue in central Leicester close to the station\, will be supported by The Shires Branch of The Betjeman Society and the main speakers will be Dr John Florance\, President of The Shires Branch and who has made Larkin one of his authors to lecture about in his own lecture series in Newark\, Dr Philip Pullen of the Philip Larkin Society and Dr Tim Hancock\, Lecturer in English at Ulster University\, author of recently published John Betjeman: Making Light. In addition to the three talks there will be the chance to have some readings too\, plenty of time to mingle and chat\, with refreshments on arrival and a hot buffet lunch included. \nJohn Florance’s talk will be ‘The quickest way to start a punch-up’. Introducing Betjeman’s work to American readers\, Larkin wrote: “The quickest way to start a punch-up between two British literary critics is to ask them what they think about the poems of Sir John Betjeman.” This talk will bring out what Larkin admired and celebrated in the older poet’s work\, the nature of their friendship and the differences between the men and their work. By way of introduction there will be a short section on Larkin’s Leicester. \nPhilip Pullen’s talk will be ‘A coming together of sorts’ : Betjeman and Larkin’s collaborative adventures. \nTim Hancock’s talk will be ‘Larkin’s suppressed Betjeman period’ (Provisional title) about Betjeman’s influence on Larkin’s formative years. \nAlso\, we intend to show the BBC Monitor TV programme with Betjeman & Larkin (by permission of the BBC). \nFor details of how to book please scroll to the bottom of the page.

This is followed by a Chinese style buffet lunch with wine (sandwich option available). In the afternoon we’ll be given a tour of the hall and its lovely\, extensive gardens then after more refreshments there will be the opportunity\, using maps provided\, for self-guided exploration\, on foot or by car\, of Boars Hill including the former homes of Bridges and Masefield\, the Jarn Garden and Mound and the Elizabeth Daryush Memorial Garden.\nThe inclusive cost for the day is just £20. SUMMARY:The Highgate Highflyers
DESCRIPTION:The juxtaposition of Hopkins & Betjeman\, two very different poets\, may at first seem odd. There are\, however\, many points of intersection between the two in their lives\, poetry\, and interests. We have retained a top-flight team of speakers and which we think you’ll find too good to miss. Please see the linked Programme.\nBook on-line for Saturday 2nd October and learn more about these two much loved poets.\nTo accompany this joint day with ALS members\, both societies have produced special\nissues of their journals highlighting the two poets and their influences on and from other writers. Copies of these journals can be ordered on the Registration Form and sent by post to applicants. Please note members of the Betjeman Society have already received this journal – this year’s The Betjemanian\, but you may wish to buy the Hopkins Society journal too.\nPlease note the closing date for applications for the event is 17 September. A separate email containing the programme and booking form was sent to members in the last week of August. However it may be worth checking if there are any places available for the day if you wish to try. Please see the Programme and Booking Form at https://allianceofliterarysocieties.files.wordpress.com/2021/08/als-autumn-newsletter-21.pdf   Scroll down to the bottom of the newsletter. \n
