That has always amused me.”

SUMMARY:Hints and Revelations: Radius Festival of Drama 2024
DESCRIPTION:This year Radius return to St Mark’s Newnham\, Cambridge\, for what promises to be a great day. The day includes a directing master class with two professional actors exploring Shakespeare’s The Tempest\, a performance of A hint of an unknown God by Rex Walford\, which dramatises poetry by John Betjeman\, and Q&A.  \nHints and Revelations takes its title in part from Rex Walford’s dramatization of John Betjeman’s poetry\, A Hint of the Unknown God. This will take place after lunch and will present some of Betjeman’s best-loved poems. These explore his fascination with matters religious\, both with the human spirit – its hopes\, fears and solaces – and with the Church as an institution. It is to be produced and directed by Tricia Peroni and Wendy Walford\, both stalwarts of the first Radius Festival in 2022. \nHints and Revelations concludes with a Q and A session and a panel of drama practitioners will field questions raised by the day’s programme\, and by religious drama in general. \nRadius explores faith\, belief\, social\, ethical questions and what it is to be human\, through drama. DESCRIPTION:The Society’s 2024 AGM will be held at St Botolph without Bishopsgate Church\, Bishopsgate\, London EC2M 3TL in the adjacent church hall on Saturday 13th July at 11.00 for 11.30 with refreshments on arrival. \nAfter a buffet lunch\, at about 2.00pm our member\, Don Kennedy\, will lead a tour of nearby Liverpool Street Station. \nWe want to give members another chance to see Liverpool Street Station and explain why we are so concerned about the proposals to submerge it under a tower block. Don is a mine of information\, and he will also use the tour to highlight other aspects of the station’s history\, including its role in being the terminal where 669 Jewish children saved by Sir Nicholas Winton arrived in London\, and where there are now two monuments to this remarkable humanitarian achievement. This is the subject of a new film with Sir Anthony Hopkins in the main role as Sir Nicholas Winton. \nThe cost is £30 per person. SUMMARY:Betjeman's Oxford - a guided walk
DESCRIPTION:Led by Andrew McCallum\, the walk will start outside the Dragon School\, where JB first arrived in Oxford\, at 2pm promptly and going via places he knew well\, including Magdalen College\, will finish at The Painted Room about 1¾ hours later. Readings along the way will be a mix of poetry and prose. The Painted Room belongs to The Oxford Preservation Trust and was their offices during the time when JB was\, briefly\, their Secretary. The Trust usually only open it about once a month for tours but I am pleased to say that they will open it specially for us even though the 20th June is the date of their AGM\, later that evening. Please note that The Painted Room is up a flight of steep stairs with no lift access. When they do tours they charge non members £5 so I propose we offer them a donation of £5 each (cash on the day\, please). \nAndrew McCallum is Vice Chairman of The Betjeman Society\, a member of the Oxford Preservation Trust and was\, like JB\, at the Dragon School. \nTo book please contact the Severn & Wye branch as below.

SUMMARY:Westminster Abbey Service\, Poets Corner\, Tuesday 21st May\, 6.00pm.
DESCRIPTION:It seems entirely appropriate that the Society marks the fortieth anniversary of John Betjeman’s death with a wreath laying service in Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey\, a building so much loved and revered by him. Indeed his own Memorial Service was held there in 1984 and then there was the unveiling of the cartouche in Poet’s Corner in 1996 commemorating Betjeman. The Service will be conducted by the Abbey clergy who will also lay a wreath at the base of the column bearing his cartouche. \nAfterwards from 7-9pm there will be wine and canapés at The Athenaeum Club. The Clubhouse is located at 107 Pall Mall\, at the corner of Waterloo Place. It was designed by Club member Decimus Burton in 1830 in the Neoclassical style. A gilded statue of Athena\, Goddess of Wisdom\, looks out from a front balcony as the Club’s spirit and guide. \nOur meeting will be held in the North Library\, one of several meeting rooms that evoke the atmosphere of a London Club. Betjeman was a member himself until resigning over what he thought was inappropriate redecoration of the Coffee Room. \nThe cost will be £25 and bookings should be made by one of the following methods detailed at the bottom of this page. \nIf you intend to go to the Service only please email events@betjemansociety.com or write to Betjeman Society Events\, 38 Lapsley Drive\, Banbury\, OX16 1EW. DESCRIPTION:A Celebratory Mass on Saturday 18 May at the Convent of St Mary the Virgin\, Denchworth Road\, Wantage\, Oxfordshire\, OX12 9AU \nPat Mattimore of the Wantage Branch writes: ‘It is a really lovely venue with strong links to John Betjeman – “Wantage Bells” mentions ‘the Nuns in their Chapel Gloom’. I will try to borrow the handwritten draft of the poem from the bellringers at SS Peter and Paul. It is a very old Convent which has had a considerable amount of updating in recent years and the new Wing is light\, airy and welcoming with excellent facilities including good parking. The Convent is on the edge of the Town\, easy to drive to\, buses from Didcot Parkway to Wantage and from Oxford – details to be confirmed if anybody needs them.’ \nOur President The Venerable David Meara will lead the Service and there will also be a Eucharist service incorporated. \nThe programme in outline is: \n10am – coffee/tea and biscuits to be served in the Nelson Mandela Room \n10.45am all proceed into St Mary’s Chapel ready for the Service\, lasting approximately one hour. \n12.30 – 2pm – Move to the rooms reserved for our Lunch \n2.00pm Poetry reading\, discussion\, with a short tour of the Convent. DESCRIPTION:Three Books of Verse \nPoetry by Zoom. 15 March at 4.30pm \nThis year we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the publication of ‘A Few Late Chrysanthemums’ and ‘Poems in the Porch’ in 1954 and the 50th anniversary of the publication of  ‘A Nip in the Air’\, all three volumes containing some of JB’s most memorable verses. So via Zoom an informal meeting to share favourite poems and listen to fellow members reading these and discussing what is so memorable about them.  Lasting about an hour it will also be a chance to learn about how these volumes came to be published and celebrate their place in JB’s much loved poetry. \nPlease email sonjack1@aol.com  if you want the zoom link and nearer the date he will be glad to send you this with an update on proceedings.

DESCRIPTION:“A Book\, about a Bear\, by a Boy: The Life and Strange Times of Archibald Ormsby-Gore” \n  \nA talk by Garry Gibbons\, a volunteer at the Uffington Museum and a personal friend of Archibald Ormsby-Gore or\, as he is known to his close friends\, Archie. \nArchie is at least 110 years old and from a very early age owned a human named Sir John Betjeman. Archie and Sir John were virtually inseparable throughout their time together. Sadly\, Sir John had to leave Archie in 1984. Archie supported Sir John throughout his eventful life\, at times offering him succour\, a kind word or\, if necessary\, a stern talking to. Sir John wrote an action-packed story about Archie’s adventures entitled\, ‘Archie and the Strict Baptists’; the story was eventually published as a book in 1977. Of course\, Archie is the book’s central character but it also features his close companion\, Jumbo. This talk explores the story behind the book which offers a small but fascinating window into Archie and Sir John’s world. \nThe speaker and host encourage the audience to bring along their teddies — after all\, Archie and Jumbo love meeting new friends. \nThe talk is a prelude to a new Exhibition at the Oxfordshire Museum: ‘Archie and the Poet’\, opening on January 13th 2024\, it is a tribute to the poet\, Sir John Betjeman. DESCRIPTION:Martin Jennings (who made the JB statue at St Pancras\, the JB bust at The Downland Museum\,Wantage and the Philip Larkin statue at Hull Paragon Station) is dropping in after lunch for a Q & A session. Of course Martin has also designed the new Royal stamps and the design of the 50p coin depicting King Charles III\, so this event promises to be fascinating. \nWe hope to keep the cost to £30 to include 3 courses\, coffee; Prosecco or similar on arrival and wine and soft drinks with the meal. We have a professional caterer who has done the lunch for the past two years and Snells Hall with some dressing up rises to the occasion.

It became a cult classic\, regularly played on radio by John Peel\, and is treasured by many musicians including Jarvis Cocker and Suggs (Madness). DESCRIPTION:Last year saw the publication of a new guide to the beautiful county of Northumberland\, following in the Shell Guide tradition established by JB. We are very pleased to have its author\, The Rt Revd Dr Stephen Platten talk to us about the Shell County Guides and Betjeman’s key part in their birth and development. Dr Platten was the last Bishop of Wakefield up to 2014 when the diocese became part of the new Diocese of Leeds. His first three working years were with Shell at Shell Centre in London. He has written extensively and his books include: Abbeys and Priories of Britain; Batsford/Pitkin. 2022; Austin Farrer for Today: A Prophetic Agenda (with Richard Harries); SCM Press. 2020.
