SUMMARY:A Book\, about a Bear\, by a Boy: The Life and Strange Times of Archibald Ormsby-Gore
DESCRIPTION:“A Book\, about a Bear\, by a Boy: The Life and Strange Times of Archibald Ormsby-Gore” \n  \nA talk by Garry Gibbons\, a volunteer at the Uffington Museum and a personal friend of Archibald Ormsby-Gore or\, as he is known to his close friends\, Archie. \nArchie is at least 110 years old and from a very early age owned a human named Sir John Betjeman. Archie and Sir John were virtually inseparable throughout their time together. Sadly\, Sir John had to leave Archie in 1984. Archie supported Sir John throughout his eventful life\, at times offering him succour\, a kind word or\, if necessary\, a stern talking to. Sir John wrote an action-packed story about Archie’s adventures entitled\, ‘Archie and the Strict Baptists’; the story was eventually published as a book in 1977. Of course\, Archie is the book’s central character but it also features his close companion\, Jumbo. This talk explores the story behind the book which offers a small but fascinating window into Archie and Sir John’s world. \nThe speaker and host encourage the audience to bring along their teddies — after all\, Archie and Jumbo love meeting new friends. \nThe talk is a prelude to a new Exhibition at the Oxfordshire Museum: ‘Archie and the Poet’\, opening on January 13th 2024\, it is a tribute to the poet\, Sir John Betjeman. DESCRIPTION:Martin Jennings (who made the JB statue at St Pancras\, the JB bust at The Downland Museum\,Wantage and the Philip Larkin statue at Hull Paragon Station) is dropping in after lunch for a Q & A session. Of course Martin has also designed the new Royal stamps and the design of the 50p coin depicting King Charles III\, so this event promises to be fascinating. \nWe hope to keep the cost to £30 to include 3 courses\, coffee; Prosecco or similar on arrival and wine and soft drinks with the meal. We have a professional caterer who has done the lunch for the past two years and Snells Hall with some dressing up rises to the occasion.

DESCRIPTION:A celebration of Betjeman’s poems set to music by BAFTA winning composer Jim Parker\, performed by Zeb Soanes and the Chris Warner Ensemble at Malmesbury. \nIn 1974 John Betjeman\, then Poet Laureate\, became an unlikely pop star\, recording his verse to music by Jim Parker for the album Banana Blush. It became a cult classic\, regularly played on radio by John Peel\, and is treasured by many musicians including Jarvis Cocker and Suggs (Madness). DESCRIPTION:Last year saw the publication of a new guide to the beautiful county of Northumberland\, following in the Shell Guide tradition established by JB. We are very pleased to have its author\, The Rt Revd Dr Stephen Platten talk to us about the Shell County Guides and Betjeman’s key part in their birth and development. Dr Platten was the last Bishop of Wakefield up to 2014 when the diocese became part of the new Diocese of Leeds. His first three working years were with Shell at Shell Centre in London. He has written extensively and his books include: Abbeys and Priories of Britain; Batsford/Pitkin. 2022; Austin Farrer for Today: A Prophetic Agenda (with Richard Harries); SCM Press. 2020. SUMMARY:Barts and Betjeman Celebration Evening
DESCRIPTION:This special event will celebrate the 900th anniversary of the Hospital’s founding and its association with the former Poet Laureate\, Sir John Betjeman\, who lived nearby in Cloth Fair and was himself a patient and a regular visitor to the wards at the Hospital.We will be in the magnificent surroundings of the Great Hall\, one of the last events before it closes for major restoration works. \nDrinks and canapes will be served from 6.30pm. The Venerable David Meara\, former Archdeacon of London and author of A Passion for Places: England through the eyes of John Betjeman\, will talk about the poet and his links with the Hospital; some of Betjeman’s best known poems will be read\, including one written about Barts while he waited to see his consultant\, and there will be a surprise guest or two. Live music will add to the summer evening’s entertainment. \nThe winners of our 900th Anniversary Poetry Competition will be announced and presented with their prizes and their poems will receive their first public readings. The deadline for entries is 5pm\, Monday\, 5 June: for further details please pick up a flyer from Barts or click here. \nThe Governors of the Voluntary Hospital ran the Hospital for 400 years until 1948 when the NHS was created. SUMMARY:'Not Far From Brideshead: Oxford Between the Wars'    a talk by Dr Daisy Dunn
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning author and historian Dr Daisy Dunn introduces the world of interwar Oxford with its punting\, picnics and warring dons. This was the world that inspired Evelyn Waugh as well as John Betjeman and many others. Soldiers returned to study after the horrors of the trenches and women received degrees for the first time. But amid the relief and jubilation came the threat of further unrest as events in Europe began to spiral. \nDr Daisy Dunn is the author of six books\, including Not Far From Brideshead: Oxford Between the Wars\, Of Gods and Men: 100 Stories from Ancient Greece and Rome\, and Catullus’ Bedspread: The Life of Rome’s Most Erotic Poet. She read Classics at Oxford before receiving an MA in Art History from the Courtauld and PhD in Classics and Art History from UCL. She is a critic for The Spectator and writes widely for the press. \nThe venue for this talk is the Grosvenor Chapel\, deep in the heart of Mayfair. It the setting for Betjeman’s “Lenten Thoughts of a High Church Anglican” and well worth visiting. It contains a recently installed plaque\, with the full text of the poem\, commemorating Betjeman and his muse for the poem\, Joan Constantinidi. DESCRIPTION:The film Metro-Land should be familiar to many of you and 26 February 2023 is the 50th anniversary of the first screening of the film. We are delighted to host a special evening celebrating this event for a film that enjoys classic and cult status in its celebration of a part of London’s suburbia and a personal journey by John Betjeman through some of his favourite parts of London using the Metropolitan line as the route. We will be joined by Society Vice President and Metro-Land producer\, Eddie Mirzoeff and we hope to have other special guests joining us too to celebrate the milestone. We will also be looking at how Metro-Land looks these days and there will be a sprinkling of poetry and prose readings to complement the film. \nEddie believes he has persuaded the BBC to screen Metro-Land on the evening of the actual anniversary Sunday 26 February so our event should set this viewing up well. \nPlease let Steve Jackson know via sonjack1@aol.com  if you want the zoom link and nearer the date he will be glad to send you this with an update on proceedings. \nA unique event!

SUMMARY:Joint event with the TCPA: Sir Frederic J Osborn memorial event 2022: Exploring a sense of place.
DESCRIPTION:Join the Town & Country Planning Association for an evening of poetry\, drinks and discussion for their annual event in memory of Sir Frederic J Osborn. Osborn was an important figure in the TCPA’s history. A passionate campaigner for healthy places and social justice\, Osborn was instrumental in securing the New Towns legislation\, which enabled 32 new towns to be established across the UK as part of creating and rebuilding homes and communities following the Second World War. Alongside his campaigning work – Osborn wrote prolifically including satire and poetry\, and a book of his verses – ‘Can Man Plan?’ – was published in 1959. \nWith performances from poets Zena Edwards and Emily Hasler with Jonathan Glancey\, architectural critic\, writer and Patron of The Betjeman Society\, this event will explore how poetry and the arts can help us understand people and place. The event will touch on some of Osborn’s work and correspondence with Sir John Betjeman\, one the pre-eminent poets of the 20th century who enthused people about the value of Britain’s cities\, landscapes and architecture\, alongside contemporary perspectives on creating a sense of place. This subject complements TCPA’s wider work\, particularly on reuniting art and planning\, and on exploring how the foundations of the Garden City movement can give practical hope to 21st century communities. \nThe TCPA are grateful to the Lady Margaret Paterson Osborn Trust for supporting this event\, which is being held in partnership with The Betjeman Society. \nTickets are free but should be booked online using the link below. \n
