Lance Pierson, Chairman of the Society, announced that Jonathan Glancey is to be the Patron of the Society.
He is an honorary fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA); was architecture editor of the Independent, then of the Guardian; and now writes for the BBC Culture Website.
He is best known to the Society for his delightful anthologies JB on Trains and on Churches. He has the further advantage of being a graduate of JB’s old college, Magdalen in Oxford.
Speaking about his appointment at the AGM in November 2020, Lance Pierson said:
“This is great news. Jonathan gladly accepted our invitation and sees himself as a ‘roving ambassador’ for the Betjeman Society. His immediate reaction was ‘what the Society can offer is campaigning with a smile rather than the po faces of all too many organisations’.”
