The Betjeman Society thanked John Diffey for all his hard work as he stands down as the Hon Treasurer of the Society and member of the Council. John received an inscribed “Betjeman Block” as a reward for his long service to the Society and 6 years as Treasurer.
In thanking John, Andrew McCallum, acting Chairman of the Society said:
“John Diffey served on Council and as Treasurer from 2016 until 2022. Throughout his time he managed the Society’s financial affairs most efficiently and unobtrusively and he modernised the accounting procedures to make matters easier for future Treasurers. The accounts were always clearly presented and explained. His thoughtful and clear advice to Council on finances and on what the Society should, and should not, spend money on was always appreciated. His wise opinion on other matters was also most helpful. In addition he procured and organised delivery and return each year of The Betjeman Award maquette to and from the winner. He also procured the blue plaque which the Society presented to The Dragon School in 2017. He played a key role in the planning of the ALS joint Betjeman and Hopkins Societies Highgate conference in 2021 which had been masterminded by Lance Pierson where again, his sage advice was valued by the rest of the planning team.”
