You will all be only too aware of the challenges and difficult times we face due to the Coronavirus. We have all had to make important decisions about our health and security, and likewise we have had to make some hard but obvious decisions about the Society and its events.
Unfortunately we had to cancel our event to celebrate Bevis Hillier, our President’s 80th Birthday. Please wish him well (remotely) on 28 March his actual birthday.
Not surprisingly, we have had to cancel the AGM on 9 May at Marlborough College and hence postpone the announcement of the Betjeman Society Award. We aim to hold the AGM later this year in the autumn. More to follow soon especially details of what to do if you have already booked for the AGM.

Further information will be provided about the North Oxford walk Andrew was organising on 2 July. Rest assured the Society’s Council will continue to undertake the running of the organisation remotely over the next few months.
Commenting on these unprecedented times Lance Pierson, Chairman of the Society, said “the importance of poetry cannot be underestimated; it can challenge us, make us think, and transport us to places and times in our imagination. Being part of a society and group can also help ameliorate the feelings of isolation and separation. I would urge you to use this time to read and reflect on JB’s poetry and prose – and what better time to learn a poem by heart – so important for good mental health. Keep in touch with friends in the Society as best you can and share the ‘Bonus of laughter’ that we all need at this time.”
