Take the 12 mile challenge – Sunday 12th September
St John’s Church in Waberthwaite, Cumbria are setting local people, and visitors, a Betjeman Challenge!
In John Betjeman’s Guide to English Churches, apparently St John’s was described as “a church worth bicycling 12 miles against the wind to see”.
The church hopes people will take up the challenge by finding a way to travel there on Sunday 12th September as part of the Heritage Open Day events. They are encouraging people to travel 6 or 12 miles to the church, using any route, any distance and any legal mode of transport with a prize for the most inventive and unusual journey. Any sponsorship money, or donations, will go towards putting much-needed toilets on site. There will be drinks (and a portaloo!) on site throughout the day with volunteers to welcome visitors from 10 am onwards.
